For Precise Draw Bending, Go to Bend-IT, Inc.

Rotary draw bending is a precise method for bending and it uses die sets with a constant center line radius. A former die set is used to create the shape of the material that needs to be bent while the counter die pushes the material into the former die and travels the length of the bend at the same time. Many use draw bending for benign tubes, pipes and solid applications such as handrails, frames, roll cages on vehicles, exhaust pipes, handles, rail cars, escalators, conveyor systems, trucks and trailers, and more. Customized draw bending can be performed on ferrous and non-ferrous materials such as aluminum, bronze, brass and steel.

Mandrel bending is also used in draw bending to give the tube extra support to help reduce wrinkling and ovality reduction during the bending process. This is done with either a steel rod or a linked ball that is inserted into the tube while the bending process is ongoing. This makes sure that the end result of any draw bending procedure that provides a product that meets or exceeds customer supplied specifications. Proper bending procedures must be followed and is essential for any type of custom pipe bending procedures because any mistakes could result in product defect and injure people and property.

Draw Bending Uses

[Posted on 08 Jan 13]

Choose the proper type of pipe bending for your application for best results. Draw bending is typically used for long-radius bends and bending using heat is typically used for specialty short-radius bends.

How it Works

This type of bending uses a constant center line radius. The bender uses a former die set for the shape of the material. A counter die pushes the material to be bent into the former die, traveling the length of the bend as it pushes the material. This gives you a perfect bend. You typically see draw bending used for roll cages, exhaust pipes, handrails, frames, escalators, trailers, trucks and rail cars.

In some applications, the shape of the bend and the amount of wrinkles in the bend is important. For example, the quality of the exhaust on a race car is important because it affects the engine. An engine mixes gas and air in the intake manifold, and then the intake valves allow the mixture into the cylinder where it is compressed the combusted. A four-stroke engine has the following stroke: intake, compression, combustion and exhaust. What goes in must go out, so the size of the exhaust pipe must be relevant to the size of the exhaust valves.

Furthermore, for the exhaust to leave the engine without affecting vacuum in the engine, it must flow smoothly. The longer the bends in the pipe and the less wrinkles in the exhaust pipe, the better the exhaust leaves the engine.

You can use draw bending on both ferrous and non-ferrous materials, including steel, brass, aluminum and bronze. To reduce wrinkling for applications such as handrails and exhaust pipes, mandrel bending may be used during this type of bending. This gives the tubes extra support by inserting a linked ball or steel rod during the bending process.

Other Types of Bending

You may need a special bend that is a short-radius bend. You can get this by requesting hot bending. Benders often use this method to straighten or repair pipes. Many power plants and processing plants require this method for their pipes.

Bend-IT, Inc., uses alloy steel AISI 4140 and AISI 4130 for its bending projects. The steel can be bent into coils and other specialty applications. Bend-IT, Inc., also uses other types of bending to bend material in other-than-normal methods to ensure that the customer gets the desired shape for its pipe. Heating and cooling coils for sulfur tanks, sample coolers and steam lines are usually formed with other types of bending.

Choose the Right Method

If you are not sure which bending method is right for your application, call Bend-IT, Inc., and ask about draw bending for your pipe needs, whether you need a handrail, tubes for a trailer or a specialty exhaust for a racing application. If you are building a racing application, everything needs to be perfect for a perfect run. Talk to one of our technicians to discuss your specific racing application, whether you are building a funny car, a mod or a street rod.
